Data Storage and Management

There are many aspects to research data, storing it, preserving it, managing it, collaborating with it, curating it, publishing it and analysing it. ITS can offer you advice and services in each of these areas.
We aim to help researchers at the University of Melbourne and affiliates to:
  • store and preserve their research data,
  • work with both small and large-scale research datasets, and
  • share and collaborate more effectively on research data.

For an overview of data management plans, see the Doing Data Better web site.

Services

Currently ITS Research provides following research data services:

Data Management Consultation

We assist researchers in determining the best solutions to their data management needs, including design and development of appropriate tools for data collection and management.

Data Storage

We offer both short and long-term data storage plans. All data storage options include  quality storage management and preservation of the research data on a well-maintained and reliable storage architecture. See our data storage use cases, which demonstrate how the research data storage service was used to address data management issues, including storage, access, migration and workflow.

Data Architecture

We assist with defining overall data architecture requirements: how data will be stored, processed and used. We also advice on data requirements for individual research projects.

We guide researchers on use of recognised data standards and coordinate architectural planning with existing and future research data sets.

Collaboration, Presentation and Analysis

We can advise on approaches to data capture and collection. We can also provide analysis on security and reliability of methods for sharing and collaborating on data sets.

Repository Management

We support data modelling, data warehousing, data repositories, data integration, data sharing, collections, and archives.

We co-develop and support the Distributed and Reflective Informatics System (DaRIS). DaRIS primarily supplies a biomedical imaging data management capability and is built with the Mediaflux data operating system. It provides a streamlined flow of data and meta-data from instrument to repository to compute platform.

Interactions and collaborations

To provide researchers with the best available resources and platforms for enhancing their research activities we also work closely with several national research initiatives, such as the Research Data Storage Infrastructure (RDSI), Australian National Data Service (ANDS) and National eResearch Collaboration Tools and Resources (NeCTAR).
